10 Short-Lived WWE Attitude Era Rivalries We Wanted To See More Of
Matthew Perez WWE's Attitude Era featured some of the greatest rivalries of all time like Mr. McMahon vs. Steve Austin or D-Generation X vs. The Nation of Domination. Bret Hart is actually not often included on the list of "greatest rivalries of the Attitude Era" since many believe that the era began directly after the Montreal Screwjob. Even with "the Hitman" out of the equation there were a ton of great storylines and feuds that often went beyond the ring, making them even more compelling.

With so much talent in WWE during the Attitude Era, it was impossible for every wrestler to fulfill every potentially great rivalry. Sometimes, a great feud only lasted a week or even one match. This list will examine ten short-lived Attitude Era rivalries that fans wanted more of.
10 Shawn Michaels Vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
Due to the injury that Shawn Michaels suffered at the 1998 Royal Rumble, he missed most of the Attitude Era. One of the only major notable rivalries that Michaels was able to have post-Montreal was his feud with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

Although they did get the big-time WrestleMania moment, Shawn Michaels was hurt and wasn't able to compete at a high level. There were an endless amount of storylines that could have happened between the two but since Michaels ended up being out of action for four years, fans only got the one major feud between the two in the Attitude Era.
9 The Rock Vs. Booker T
The Rock and Booker T crossed paths a few times in WWE and it was always a spectacle. A potential long-term feud between the two would have been awesome since both of them had tremendous star power. A feud with The Rock could have also helped Booker T quickly establish himself after arriving from WCW.
Unfortunately, not only did the two go through the entire Attitude Era with only one great storyline, but they also didn't make it up in the Ruthless Aggression Era. The Rock left the WWE in 2004 and that was the end of any potential feud between the two.
8 Chris Jericho Vs. Mankind
When Chris Jericho arrived in WWE during the Attitude Era, he and Mankind put on a great match that should have set up a potentially great storyline between the two. Instead, a storyteller at the caliber of Chris Jericho was never able to pair his talents with Mankind.
The two could have had an early classic feud that would have helped launch Jericho even before he won the Undisputed Championship but it somehow never happened.
7 Hollywood Hogan Vs. Steve Austin
Many consider WrestleMania 18 to be the end of the Attitude Era. In the lead-up to the "icon versus icon" match between The Rock and Hollywood Hogan, Hogan and Steve Austin actually crossed paths in the ring for the first time ever.
It was in a handicap tag team match where the nWo (Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Hogan) faced off against The Rock and Steve Austin. This was the closest the two ever got to an actual match and not only did a feud between Hogan and Austin not happen in the Attitude Era, it actually never happened, period.
6 D-Generation X Vs. The Legion Of Doom
Although Triple H and Shawn Michaels are best remembered for their antics during the Attitude Era, the pair were a pretty great unit. Michaels was on track to be the face of WWE and it left a little room for the two to compete as a tag team in a major way.
A classic match that the pair did have was against The Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal). It would have been nice to see a true tag team rivalry from the original members of DX but within a few months of that one match, Shawn Michaels was on top of WWE leaving no room for a tag feud.
5 Vader Vs. Mark Henry
The Attitude Era didn't shy away from big men and a major missed opportunity was a longer feud between Vader and Mark Henry. Although Mark Henry struggled to find an identity early on, Vader was already an established figure who battled Henry in a few forgettable matches.
The pair only had one pay-per-view match despite the fact that they had the potential to put on a show under any stipulation. By 1998, their feud was officially over for good and it never became the "great battle" everyone wanted.
4 Ken Shamrock Vs. Chris Jericho
When Chris Jericho arrived in WWE, he was seen as a great technician who was competing against the likes of Dean Malenko and Eddie Guerrero in WCW. A big missed opportunity occurred early on when Jericho wrestled against Ken Shamrock.
The two stars put on a great match and despite the fact that they did cross paths a few times in the ring, they were never given enough time to build a rivalry that could have been highlight reel worthy. At the very least, Ken Shamrock was a potential opponent that could have helped build up Jericho before he won the Undisputed WWE Championship.
3 Owen Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels
No wrestler was more poorly used after the Montreal Screwjob than Owen Hart. There were multiple angles that WWE could have taken with him in the aftermath of what happened to his brother, Bret Hart. One of those angles could have been a great feud between him and Shawn Michaels.

They did compete in a few great matches and, of course, HBK will always be best remembered for feuding with Bret Hart. Still, Michaels also could've had at least one great rivalry with Owen after the Screwjob. It's one of the many "what ifs" of HBK's long WWE career.
2 The Undertaker Vs. Haku
The Attitude Era booked few stars at the level of The Undertaker. He was often seen as someone who was impossible to overcome and that was his appeal when he was feuding with the likes of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Mankind.
Haku, meanwhile, was one of the toughest wrestlers to ever set foot in the wrestling ring. He was still around during the Attitude Era and even wrestled The Undertaker in 2001. There was a huge missed opportunity between him and "the Deadman" since it could have been an ultimate battle of two forces and instead it was just a forgettable television match during a Brothers of Destruction run.
1 Shawn Michaels Vs. Mankind
Many wrestling fans don't even realize that Shawn Michaels and Mankind had only one singles match in the Attitude Era. Their chemistry was electric and the two should've had a final rivalry that was on par with Mankind's feud with The Undertaker.
Unfortunately, this is one of those potential rivalries that was never able to happen due to Shawn Michaels' injury. The two had wrestled for Shawn Michaels' WWE Championship at In Your House: Mind Games 1996, which ended via disqualification, so there was so much potential left on the table between the two when the Attitude Era began in 1997.
