10 Things Fans Didn't Know About ECW's Dudley Family
Sophia Edwards Pro wrestling fans know The Dudley Boyz — Bubba Ray and D-Von, sometimes with Spike Dudley in tow — who made a name for themselves as tag team specialists in Extreme Championship Wrestling before moving on to WWE, Impact Wrestling and beyond, capturing tag team titles pretty much wherever they went. Because the tag team has enjoyed such longevity, it’s easy to forget that they were initially part of an entire stable called The Dudley Family.

Formed in 1995, The Dudley Family lasted until Bubba Ray and D-Von’s departure for WWE in 1999. There’s likely a lot that fans forgot about the whole family, so let’s take a look at their time in ECW and what fans should know about them.
10 A Stable Of Half-Brothers
The history of wrestling is full of kayfabe relatives like the Andersons, the Hollys, and the Smoking Gunns, and The Dudley Family is part of that rich tradition, albeit with a slightly more involved backstory than the norm. The Dudley Family are actually all half-brothers, the sons of Big Daddy Dudley, a fictional traveling salesman who fathered children across America, many of whom decided to go to Philadelphia, wear tie-dyed shirts, and form a professional wrestling stable.
9 Created By Raven
Reportedly based on the Hanson brothers from the cult classic hockey film Slap Shot — as evidenced by the group’s penchant for taped-up glasses — The Dudley Family wasn’t actually the brainchild of ECW boss Paul Heyman as one might think. Rather, it’s ECW star Raven who takes credit for the Dudley Family concept, while fellow ECW star Taz claims that he collaborated on the idea. The group’s relationship with Raven was an on-screen matter in their early run as well, as they were affiliated with his faction Raven’s Nest.
8 Several Members Were Trained By Johnny Rodz
The Dudley Family may only be kayfabe siblings, but a few of them actually have the same background as far as pro wrestling is concerned, as Bubba Ray Dudley, D-Von, and Big Dick Dudley were all trained by Johnny Rodz. Known as a jobber on-screen during his 1965-1985 run with WWE, Rodz has notoriety in the business as a prolific training, having helped bring up stars for over 30 years.

Known for training out of a gym in Brooklyn, NY, called Gleason’s Gym, Rodz also trained other ECW legends including Tommy Dreamer and Taz.
7 Bubba Ray & D-Von Weren’t Original Members
One fact about The Dudleys that may legitimately shock fans is that when the faction formed in ECW, Bubba Ray and D-Von weren’t a part of it. Originally, the group was composed of Dudley Dudley, Big Dick Dudley, and Snot Dudley, with Dudley Dudley being the only member of the family whose mother was Big Daddy Dudley’s actual wife, Momma Dudley. Gradually more family members would be added as the need arose, with Dances With Dudley, Chubby Dudley, and Sign Guy Dudley showing up before Bubba Ray and D-Von.
6 Sign Guy Dudley Was A Plant
While many of the Dudleys competed in the ring, Sign Guy Dudley was more of a manager to the group, and was introduced in a unique way. Before he accompanied the Dudleys to the ring, Sign Guy Dudley repeatedly showed up in the crowd at ECW shows, dressing as a member of the group and holding up pro-Dudley signs, suggesting that he was just another superfan that showed up at ECW events. But Sign Guy Dudley was actually employed by ECW and deliberately placed in the crowd to promote the group.
5 D-Von Feuded With The Dudleys
D-Von Dudley wasn’t just a later member of the Dudley Family — he was also their enemy. In April 1996, D-Von debuted and stated his disdain for the Family, objecting to the fact that they were a comedic faction while D-Von was a serious competitor and therefore a Dudley worthy of the name. As a result, D-Von would stage attacks on his half-brothers, leading to matches with his future tag team partner, Bubba Ray. During this period, the group lost a few of its many members, including Chubby Dudley and Dances With Dudley, who departed ECW.
4 The Dudley Boyz Formed Out Of A Heel Turn
Before teaming with D-Von, Bubba Ray Dudley tagged with other family members, namely Big Dick Dudley, Dances With Dudley, and then Spike Dudley when he was introduced in the fall of 1996. It was in February of 1997 when Bubba Ray finally joined up with D-Von, turning heel in the process.

Bolstered by Big Dick Dudley and Sign Guy Dudley, The Dudley Boyz — as they’d come to be called — would become one of the most decorated tag teams in ECW, capturing the World Tag Team Championship eight times.
3 Big Dick Dudley’s Feud With Spike Dudley
The heel turn of Bubba Ray Dudley and the formation of the Dudley Boyz left Spike Dudley, the runt of the family who was Bubba Ray’s tag team partner, as the odd man out. As a result, he became a popular babyface as he fought against his half-brothers. Pretty much always the underdog, Spike Dudley engaged in a year-long feud with Big Dick Dudley, who towered over Spike and thus further underscored his underdog status.
2 Bubba Ray’s Stutter
An aspect of Bubba Ray Dudley that’s gone completely forgotten over the years is that he initially had a stuttering gimmick. While fans remember him for his vitriolic promos, Bubba Ray used to have trouble saying his own name when introducing himself, leading to his name initially being spelled as Buh Buh Ray Dudley. The stuttering gimmick would eventually resurface in The Dudley Boyz’ early days in WWE, but was quickly put to bed. In 2016, Bubba Ray addressed the loss of the stutter on Twitter, jokingly saying he was cured by Dr. Vinnie Boombatz, an Andy Kaufman character from the 1983 Rodney Dangerfield comedy special I Can't Take It No More.
1 Non-ECW Dudleys
As stated, the Dudley Family disappeared once Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von jumped ship to WWE, but other Dudleys have surfaced outside of ECW over the years. In particular, Big Dick Dudley found another half brother in Psycho Sam Dudley, and together they held the USA Pro Wrestling Tag Team Championship together in 2001. Snot Dudley also teamed with a non-ECW Dudley named Schmuck Dudley. Even D-Von’s real-life kids — Terrence and Terrell Hughes — got in on the fun, wrestling as Terrence and Terrell Dudley on the indie scene in the mid to late 2010s.
