Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

We bet your group definitely has one Akash, Sameer or Sidharth. Because these were not just characters but real people like us. Dil Chahta Hai is a movie that went on to change Bollywood friendships forever. Who would have thought that the story of three close friends and their messed up lives would connect so well with the generation and remain in everyone’s heart so many years down the line.

This Bollywood film can truly be regarded as the game changer for mainstream Hindi cinema. It proved that you don’t need a typical hero and heroine pairing for making a commercially successful Bollywood movie. The reason why Dil Chahta Hai has such a special place in all our hearts is because it is so relatable in every aspect.

The chemistry between besties Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna in the movie gave us an accurate reflection of how we talk and behave in the company of our friends. Here is a good example of it.

It’s hard to believe that it was Farhan Akhtar’s first film. The trademark scene in which Aamir, Saif and Akshaye gaze at the sun as they are contemplating life and then moments later look at each other and burst out laughing pretty much sums up this Bollywood film.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a perfect homage to male bonding mainly because Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol fitted in so well into their characters. It was a road movie to the extreme and the three friends are shown snorkelling, sky diving and running from bulls in Spain.

Which not only showed the love these three friends had for adventure, but also justified how they conquered their fear and learnt to live in the present.

Hrithik’s character in the film gave us a glimpse of a problem that exists in many of the young achievers out there. We get so blinded by the desire to reach to the top, that we end up forgetting that the journey is the best part.

The film taught us that while achieving our goals in life is important, it is also necessary to enjoy the little things in life that we often forget to experience.

Rang De Basanti (2006)
Director : Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

In the first half of the Bollywood film, we see a bunch of college friends living a carefree life just like every other student in college. But, things change when their friend Ajay (R. Madhavan) becomes a victim of an aircraft accident. While the actual reasons was the inability of the government to buy appropriate parts, Ajay’s poor piloting skills were highlighted by the government.

Enraged by this, the five friends decided to take matter in their own hands. They knew that if they want to bring about a change, it can only come through radical means.

Like their counterparts from an earlier era, they embark upon shock and awe tactics to enlighten the people. The film ignited a spark amongst the youth to fight for what they believe in.

Wake Up Sid (2009)

Director : Ayan Mukerji

Lazy, spoilt and careless. These three things accurately defined Sidharth Malhotra (Ranbir Kapoor) as a person. Ranbir’s character in the film will remind you of your friends who don’t have a clue for what they plan to do with their lives. But, we must realise that like Sid, we need to follow our passion in life. The transition to adulthood is no doubt a difficult one as it comes with its own sets of challenges and responsibilities. But, if you are persistent in your approach towards a goal, sooner or later, you will definitely realise your true self and let go of an aimless existence.

3 Idiots (2009)

Director : Rajkumar Hirani

This Bollywood film gave us an accurate description of the struggle that a student pursuing a high demand course like engineering goes through. 3 Idiots taught us that the most important thing in life is to always be happy in what you are doing. People also many times end up worrying too much about how successful or unsuccessful they might end up despite the effort they put in. As explained by Rancho (Aamir Khan) in the film, we must always strive to be excellent in what we pursue without bothering about the success or failure that will come with it. The chemistry of the three leads in the Bollywood film also gave us a nostalgia ride back to our college days.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)
Director : Ayan Mukerji

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was able to hit the right chord with the audience for it’s honest portrayal of love and friendship. Many times the priorities of our work and personal lives get mixed up, something which happens to Ranbir Kapoor’s character in the film. While Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) had the burning desire to travel the world, so, when he got a job that could give him just that, he did not hesitate. Bunny did not feel that it is possible to have a demanding job and a steady relationship at the same time. However, Naina (Deepika Padukone) felt that she could strike the balance between the two. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani showed us how two completely opposite people are able to come together and share their lives.

Queen (2014)
Director : Vikas Bahl

In this Bollywood film, we saw a heartbroken small town girl embark on a honeymoon all by herself after her fiancé calls of the wedding. When she goes to Europe, she realises that it is important to live your life on your own terms and find happiness within with what you have. Her interactions with the people from different parts of the world on her trip helps her form a new take on life.

Her journey from being someone who was criticised by her fiancé for being uncool to a confident and liberated woman is heartwarming and also encouraged many women of the current generation to get out of their shells and find their own wings.
