Bad Bunny's Sliced Bread At WWE Backlash Was A Tribute To AJ Lee
David Mccullough Bad Bunny returned to WWE at Backlash last weekend and reminded fans just how much of a natural he is. Competing in a Street Fight against Damian Priest, the man he competed alongside in his debut, Bunny picked up a win in a match that probably should have closed the show. The hometown hero winning in front of a lively Puerto Rican crowd, plus all of the cameos that came with it, made for a pretty special match.
A Tribute To AJ Lee
One wrestler of Puerto Rican descent who didn't make an appearance in the match is AJ Lee. However, even though she couldn't be there, Bunny made sure he paid tribute to Lee in the match. The singer has since told People magazine that his use of Sliced Bread was his way of tipping his proverbial cap to the former Divas' Champion.
Lee wasn't the first person to use the move, but it was a part of her arsenal when she was in WWE. Bunny's use of the move was impressive, but may well have been the scariest moment of a match that included a lot of risky spots and weapon use. Bunny landed a little awkwardly when connecting with the move, almost coming down on the top of his head, but thankfully he didn't seem to get hurt.
Big Cameos At Backlash
Although Lee wasn't in the match, Puerto Ricans Carlito and Savio Vega got huge reactions from the in-house fans. It's the second time Carlito has returned to WWE in recent years and fans are once again clamoring for the apple-spitting Superstar to stick around for a longer run. Carlito has hinted that might happen, also tweeting that his indie price has blown up thanks to the reaction he got at Backlash.
As for Lee potentially wrestling again, she still seems to be the exception that proves the rule when it comes to wrestlers coming out of retirement. Lee wrestled her last match more than eight years ago and even though she is currently affiliated with Women of Wrestling behind the scenes, there have been no indicators she ever plans on wrestling again. No doubt even something as fleeting as a Royal Rumble cameo, if possible, would generate a huge reaction from the fans.
