Professional Background

Dr. Brungardt is currently professor of internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita where his work focuses on Physician Well-Being, Professional Identity Formation, and the Humanities. He divides his time between first/second year student’s problem based learning and internal medicine resident clinic.

A native Kansan, Dr. Brungardt grew up on a farm near Abilene. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison and the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City for both medical school and an internal medicine residency.

Dr. Brungardt practiced internal medicine for 10 years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita as an associate professor of internal medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he was associate chief of staff for ambulatory care.

He was then medical director of Hynes Memorial Hospice for 16 years, allowing him to combine his interest and expertise in clinical care, end of life care, ethics in medicine and teaching while providing patient and family centered care for the dying and their families.

He is currently professor of internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita. Dr. Brungardt is board certified in Hospice andamp; Palliative Medicine, Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine as well as the American College of Physicians.

He completed a Licentiate (BeL) degree in bioethics at the Regina Apostolorum in Rome in 2008.

Dr. Brungardt and his lovely wife Cassandra are the parents of 10 children. They are members of the Church of the Magdalen and active in the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation.
