Rory McIlroy may be a happily married man currently, but before his marriage to Erica Stoll in 2017, the golfer was deeply in love with the former World number one Tennis star, Caroline Wozniacki. Nonetheless, their engagement didn’t last long, as the sporting couple had an ugly breakup in 2015. While the news disappointed many of their fans, Wozniacki later revealed how she felt when the golfer told the world about the end of their relationship.

During their time together, McIlroy and Wozniacki were the power couple of the sporting world. The tennis star would publicly show support for her then-beau at golf tournaments. The couple even announced their engagement in late 2013. However, things didn’t go as planned for the sporting greats, as they called off their engagement a year later.

Caroline Wozniacki had no choice with Rory McIlroy

In order to announce their high-profile breakup, McIlroy put out a press release. Nonetheless, three years later, Wozniacki revealed in an interview with Graham Bensinger how she had no choice but to face scrutiny since McIlroy broke news to the public. “It was very hard because you know he made it very public from the start”, said Caroline.

She then added how the golfer’s press release left her with no choice. “He put out a press release and all of that so I didn’t have a choice”, said the Tennis star. Wozniacki even claimed the breakup news just ‘got put in my face’. Nonetheless, she ended the message on a high note stating to be in a better place than she was in her past years.

While Rory McIlroy got married to Erica Stoll in 2017, Caroline Wozniacki also got engaged in the same year to NBA player, David Lee. Though their breakup may have been rough to overcome, both athletes took the high road to move on from each other. Now, McIlroy looks to win more Majors and titles in the sport of golf, while Wozniacki looks to enjoy her retirement from Tennis to look after her family.

As years pass by, hopefully, the former world number-one Tennis star will also forget about the McIlroy’s press statement.
