The thrilling and deadly show about a group of people who volunteer to play deadly childhood games for the chance to win a life-changing amount of money broke streaming records, increased the interest of Western audiences in non-Western shows, and has now inspired Netflix to make its own real version of the competition—without anyone actually dying, of course.
Is it a weird, dystopian idea? Definitely. But they managed to find more than enough people who were willing to make a scripted show reality, and now it's available for our viewing pleasure.
Squid Game: The Challenge will be just like the scripted series, featuring 456 contestants who each have the chance to win $4.56 million. The series will join Netflix's library of unscripted shows, which spans dating shows Love Is Blind to a rebooted version of The Mole. Who knows, by the time we get the next season of Squid Game, there could be another season of its competition counterpart at the same time.
Audiences' interests are piqued, not just because they want to see real people try challenges they've only seen actors pretend to do, but because the show has already amassed controversy. The Sun reported contestants had been injured while playing challenges, and experienced freezing temperatures amidst the show's famous "Red Light, Green Light" game. Netflix denied the allegations, but the news likely has people interested in watching regardless of what went on behind the scenes.
