Answer: If you feel like there are a million beiges and browns on the market and still not a single one that works for you, you're not alone. Backstage at the Spring 2016, manicurists acknowledged time and time again how tricky it was to get the naked nail just right. "It's so hard to find a nude that looks good, but I find it's best to start out with a color that's super opaque and mix it with 1/10 of a bottle of top coat to sheer it out and create your own custom blend," said Miss Pop, who did just that at Rodarte using O.P.I. Nail Lacquer in A Great Opera-Tunity, a peachy shade that becomes "natural and the perfect fall neutral" when diluted with a top coat. Zoya Color Developer Rebecca Isa agrees that "finding the exact match from a bottle doesn't happen very often because there is just such a wide range of skin tones" and takes a similar DIY approach. First, she says, look at the undertones of your skin the way you would if you were choosing blush and match according to whether you're warm or cool. Then, decide where you want to fall on the natural to mannequin scale. "For a full-on mannequin hand, go a little deeper and darker for more depth, and for a softer finish that looks like an extension of the skin, go a shade lighter than your foundation shade." But Isa doesn't stop there—she then color corrects using Zoya's Naked Manicure Perfectors, a line of translucent tints. "If you have a little pink in your skin and you want to do a classic nude but every nude you put on makes your skin look dead because they're all too gray or yellow, try one coat of the Pink. I'm a little bit warmer and most nudes look ashy next to my skin because they have so much warmth to them, so I do one coat of Buff. For women of color, nudes are a little bit too chalky, so a thin coat of Mauve on top of a classic nude pulls it right to their skin tone."
