ABC's behemoth reality dating show The Bachelor got a new lease on life in 2023—love in later life, specifically—with The Golden Bachelor, the first branch of the franchise to focus on seniors looking for a second chance at romance. The series starred 72-year-old Gerry Turner as the first "Golden Bachelor", who was finally ready to date again after losing his wife Toni in 2017, and a line-up of 22 "golden ladies" aged between 60 and 75.

Season 1 of The Golden Bachelor ended with Turner professing his love to Theresa Nist, a 70-year-old widow and financial services professional.

"It's a very different dynamic," Turner has said of courting in later life. "When you are younger, you are more concerned with family expectations and who will be a good partner as you build a career. When you are older, it is more about values and character and how someone makes you feel. When I first met Theresa on the show, she had this instant ability to make me feel calm. When she put her hand on my shoulder, I felt that. It is a moment that I remember."

Nist, meanwhile, has said that her priority when dating as a young person was whether or not she wanted to start a family with somebody, but that her perspective has shifted now that she's a grandmother. "In later life, it is more about heart, soul, spirit, integrity," she says. "For me, I wanted that in a potential partner, along with someone who had self-confidence and was not a pushover."

Turner proposed to Nist during the season finale—and on Thursday, January 4, they will be tying the knot in a special, first-of-its-kind wedding ceremony which will be officiated by former contestant Susan Noles, and broadcast in a two-hour special to viewers live.
