Although Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is focused on a new cast of fantastical animated characters, one member of the original Adventure Time cast has returned, and his appearance reveals the potentially tragic fate of another beloved character. First released in August 2023, Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is a spinoff of the 2010 animated series Adventure Time. It follows the adventures of Fionna and Cake from the land of Ooo. New episodes are currently airing every Thursday.
The Fionna & Cake spinoff originated from an episode of Adventure Time entitled "Fionna and Cake." It is the ninth episode of Adventure Time season 3. In the episode, it seems that all the show's original characters have been gender swapped. Rather than following the escapades of human boy Finn and his best friend Jake the dog, the episode depicted a human girl named Fionna and her cat friend Cake, along with the Prince Gumball and Ice Queen. Although this originally seemed like a parallel universe, the spinoff series has now made it seem like something more akin to the future.
Adventure Time's Spinoff Suggests That Jake Is Dead
In a recent episode of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, Finn appears as an adult, notably without Jake. As a result, the series implied that Jake has died. Logically, this tragic fate would make sense as dogs live shorter lives than humans do. During Adventure Time, it was revealed that Finn and Jake were the same age, and the series ended when Finn was 17. Therefore, it would only make sense that Jake would pass away by the time Finn reached adulthood. Although the episode doesn't quite confirm Jake's death, all of these hints support the implication.
To hint at Jake's death in Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is sad, but also, makes complete sense. If the series were to bring back Jake, it would certainly be nostalgic, but it would make little sense. Considering that Fionna & Cake seems to be the future, since Finn is an adult in it, then Jake would also have to age, and considering he is a dog, his Adventure Time age was already pushing it. So, although Jake's death is a very unfortunate detail in Fionna & Cake it was definitely necessary when bringing back Finn.
Will Adventure Time Ever Reveal How Jake Died?
As of now, it's unclear whether the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake will reveal how Jake died. According to an interview with Inverse with the show's creator, it seems somewhat unlikely. Adam Muto, Adventure Time showrunner, did confirm that Jake is dead, but went on to say that "We've shown Finn and Jake at the end of their lives. How it resolves. That's the more important ending to me." Therefore, it seems like the series will keep Jake's end ambiguous, which honestly, may be more satisfying. Without a clear answer, Jake's story and legacy can continue, which is generally, a much better fate.
