Raining havoc on saddleback ventures, Jamaica’s national cycling coach was recently met with a fateful turmoil. Carlton Simmonds saw his nightmares come true on December 2, narrowly escaping the life-threatening outcomes of his brutal fall. Navigating an under-construction road in the corporate area, it all went south for the trainer as he came across a sudden trench, sparking injuries like never before. 

As Simmonds embarked on his route to meet a cycling group, tragedy struck around 5:40 in the evening, plummeting him into a deep yet hidden ditch. With this catastrophic fall propelling him over the handlebars, the coach did not just shatter his bones from the crash but also some mobility skills. And now, despite suffering multiple fractures from the accident, the national icon overlooked his lucky save, urging for immediate safety measures. 

Cycling coach battles impacts of sudden fall

Negotiating from Caledonia Road onto South Camp Road, the Jamaican cycling coach had no idea of what lay ahead. As his trajectory was invaded by a 12-inch-wide trench, the seasoned rider was caught off-guard, tumbling down the two-foot-deep pothole.

Regrettably, Simmonds’ perilous setback posed dire consequences, breaking his collarbone in the sudden blow. Adding to his misery, the cycling instructor also suffered three fractured ribs, highlighting the severity of this disastrous incident. 

However, Simmonds’ medical battles ignited further chaos when the National Works Agency’s recent campaigns were placed under the spotlight. Shockingly, reports hinted at numerous trenches being dug across Kingston and St. Andrew as part of the government’s initiative, all within the past two months. 

Led by the NWA and eGov Jamaica, these construction measures were declared as an enhancement program, with focus on the Internet broadband network. However, Simmonds’s cycling mishap raised genuine concerns about safety negligence along these lanes, marking the perils of ongoing road activities. 

National sporting instructor calls for official changes

Urging accountability for the hazardous conditions that led to his severe injuries, Simmonds shared his personal take from the cycling tragedy, stating, “I’m lucky to be alive”, as he further noted, “It’s just because of experience why I didn’t sustain more damage.” 

Reflecting on the incident, he also emphasized the critical role played by the helmet. Although his headgear was shattered upon impact, Simmonds mentioned its role in preventing further injuries from the cycling fall.

As a former national representative, he shared video footage of the perilous spot with the Jamaica Observer, contemplating legal actions for his insufferable situation. 

While his call for accountability signaled how negligence cannot disrupt normal life without repercussions, Carlton Simmonds hoped for authoritative changes. In the wake of this distressing fall, the Jamaican coach also asked the government to lift restrictions on importing bicycles, advocating for a holistic approach to the sport.
