Miss Peregrine Sequel: Hollow City Updates

After Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children was released in 2016 a sequel seemed likely but will follow-up Hollow City ever happen? Directed by Tim Burton, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is based on the fantasy YA novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs. The film starred Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) as Jake – a teenager who discovers the existence of an enchanted orphanage manned by the titular, shape-shifting Miss Peregrine (Penny Dreadful’s Eva Green) and home to several supernaturally-powered children, including aerokinetic teen Emma (Ella Purnell).
Distributors 2oth Century Fox were so eager to adapt Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children they bought the rights to the book before it was even published. Following its publication in 2011, Riggs turned his novel into a series with the follow-ups Hollow City and Library Of Souls which were published in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Since then Riggs has added a fourth novel, A Map Of Days, to the series.
With its magical themes and multiple books waiting to be adapted, there was talk of a Miss Peregrine franchise that could become the next Harry Potter. Adapting the next novel in the Peculiar Children series would be the first step to a franchise, but is a Hollow City movie on the cards?
Miss Peregrine Left The Door Open For A Sequel
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children ended with Jake and Emma setting sail in search of a new home along with the rest of the peculiar children. Although it wasn’t exactly a cliffhanger ending that needs a sequel to tie up loose ends, it did leave the door wide open for a sequel adaptation of Hollow City.
Fox Was Interested In A Miss Peregrine Franchise
Shortly after the release of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, Chris Aronson – then chief of domestic distribution at Fox – hinted a movie franchise could be on the horizon depending on its success. Speaking to Variety regarding the film’s opening weekend, Aronson stated: “It’s a promising start, but it’s too early to tell. There are multiple books and they are best-sellers, so the door is open.”
Miss Peregrine pulled in almost $300 million worldwide against a $110 production budget, but considering Hollywood accounting dictates a film must make at least double its budget to make a profit Miss Peregrine’s box office performance wasn’t all that impressive. Or at least not enough to impress Fox who’ve since gone quiet on the matter of a sequel. Add to that the film’s lukewarm reception among critics, and it looks as though the likelihood of a Hollow City movie is slim.
