The keto diet isn't going away anytime soon, and according to a recent analysis, it's the most popular diet in America. The keto diet, short for the "ketogenic" diet, often has you wondering if relatively "healthy" foods do and don't fit into it, mushrooms included. That said, are mushrooms exactly keto-friendly?

If you're new to the keto diet, the goal is for the body to enter a state of ketosis, essentially a fat-burning state caused by reducing your protein and carb intake. Ideally on this diet, 60 to 80 percent of your total calories come from fat and 10 percent comes from carbs, keeping you between 20 to 30 grams of carbs per day to maintain ketosis.

Previously reported by Men's Health, wild mushrooms are rich in ergothioneine, an antioxidant with cell-protecting properties that may reduce your risk of cancer. Cook them in red wine, which contains the antioxidant resveratrol, for an even bigger effect.

Mushrooms also have anti-aging benefits, containing double the amount of glutathione (GSH), an anti-aging antioxidant, found in asparagus, which typically has the highest amount of GSH compared to most vegetables. Not only is the vegetable delicious, it could hold a hidden fountain of youth.

In some cases, mushrooms make a delicious meat-substitute when stacked as burger patties, mixed into a stir fry, or even eaten with a fork and a knife like a steak.

We get it, mushrooms taste amazing and are incredibly healthy, but here's what experts have to say about where the fungi falls on the keto scale.

Can you eat mushrooms on the keto diet?

"Mushrooms are most certainly acceptable in a keto diet," says Brian St. Pierre, R.D., a Men’s Health nutrition advisor. At only 21 calories, 3 grams carbs with 1 gram of fiber, a 1 cup serving of white mushrooms are an excellent addition to any keto meal.

One type of mushrooms to be cautious of is shiitake mushrooms, says St. Pierre, which have 24 calories, 7 grams of carbs per 1 cup serving, 2.5 of those being fiber.

So if keto is your thing, go ahead and add some mushrooms to your plate. They taste great, are super good for you, and won't throw you out of ketosis if eaten in the right amounts.
