Oppenheimer’s Metacritic Score Is Fantastic – But It Isn’t Nolan’s Best
Mia Walsh Oppenheimer receives a high score on Metacritic, indicating critical acclaim, but it isn't Christopher Nolan's best-reviewed on the website.
Oppenheimer has received a fantastic score on Metacritic, but it's not director Christopher Nolan's best on the site. Nolan has directed multiple critically praised movies, including The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Memento. With Oppenheimer, Nolan explores the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement in creating nuclear weapons for the United States.
On Metacritic, Oppenheimer has a score of 90, indicating Nolan's latest film has received critical acclaim. However, according to Christopher Nolan's Metacritic page, his highest-scored film on the site is Dunkirk, which sits at 94. While the release of Oppenheimershows Nolan's direction is some of his best, the movie isn't quite up to par with Dunkirk by Metacritic standards.
Nolan's 2019 film Dunkirk is a war movie depicting the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II, where Allied soldiers retreated from the beaches of Dunkirk, France in 1940. The movie is notably shorter than Oppenheimer's three-hour runtime, clocking in at 106 minutes. Dunkirk also focuses on an ensemble cast of characters, illustrating the event of the evacuation from multiple perspectives while staying true to history.
Because of the raw nature of Dunkirk, it's understandable why the film has a slightly higher score than Oppenheimer on Metacritic. But even though Dunkirk has a higher score, it doesn't undermine the glowing reviews Oppenheimer is receiving. The two films are vastly different despite being historical movies, with Dunkirk depicting an event and Oppenheimer portraying a person's life. Their similar scores reflect how Nolan is a master at creating films that have a multitude of focuses, either on one person or multiple people.
With Oppenheimer releasing this week, audiences will soon be able to judge for themselves whether the film is better or worse than Dunkirk. Since both movies have similar Metacritic scores, the experience of watching them is likely to be of a similar, high quality.
