“The first time I walked into Kamathipura, I was just wowed”, says Alia Bhatt
Olivia Owen The art and production design of every Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is a mood in and of itself. Whatever the setting or story, audiences have come to expect that signature look, which is dripping with rich detail and heavily incorporates Indian textile, artwork, colour, and texture.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is no different. The film, set between the 1950s and 1960s in Mumbai's Kamathipura and the neighbouring Falkland Road and Grant Road neighbourhoods, is based on a section of the book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai by author S Hussain Zaidi.
To commemorate the film's OTT release, Bhansali released this special Behind the Scenes video, which provides an inside look at the production. Gangubai Kathiawadi's producers released a behind-the-scenes video from the film's set with the caption, "A labour of love and emotions with a vision to bring a story to life. We bring to you the world of Kamathipura, this time through the lens of the filmmaker himself, #SanjayLeelaBhansali." When asked about Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his vision, Alia Bhatt explained, "He's a magician. I call him a magician. It's not only a scene and lines and walk from point A to B and say your dialogue. Everything has a purpose. He only eats, breathes, drinks, thinks about his movie and that's automatically what happens on his set when you're around. Everything about that vision."
The montage shows the construction of the Kamathipura sets from the ground up. Production Designers Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty, studied for 11 years under one of their field's masters. Samir Chanda, who died in 2011, was regarded as one of the most talented production designers of his generation. Chanda taught them the fine line between glamorous realism and realistic glamour, which has served them well throughout their careers. Ray and Chakraborty landed Sanjay Leela Bhansali's historical Padmaavat after working on productions by Vishal Bhardwaj and a slew of other directors. The duo collaborated with Bhansali once more for Gangubai Kathiawadi, bringing realism as well as glamour to Gangubai's world.
