If you’re old enough to remember the ’80s, ’90s, or early ’00s, you too remember an aluminum tube labeled “Bain de Soleil Orange Gelée.” It was a sunbathing essential before we all got smart about UV protection. The scent alone was addictive: a combination of white floral and sweet orange that evoked lying on a sandy beach, likely somewhere in Saint-Tropez, with a refreshing Orange Julius in hand. And the slippery oil formula left skin crisp to the touch and about four shades darker. (It boasted a sad SPF 4.)

As we became more aware of the importance of protecting skin from harmful solar rays, Bain de Soleil (it means sunbathing in French) Orange Gelée was discontinued—but that doesn’t mean longtime fans haven’t missed the iconic gel. If you consider yourself among that group, you’re in luck, because buzzy sunscreen brand Vacation has brought it back.

With founders inspired by ’80s Club Med culture, Vacation is known for putting a retro spin on classic sun protection products, such as a whipped-cream-like, “lighter-than-air” SPF 30 formula and the baby-oil-inspired Chardonnay Oil SPF 30. The brand’s specialty is integrating delightful beachy scents into its formulas, much like Bain de Soleil did. So, in true Vacation fashion, it has revived the Orange Gelée, giving it a warm, tropical fragrance similar to the original’s—but removing the pore-clogging oils and replacing them with better-for-your-skin ingredients. (Before today’s launch, the brand accumulated a 15,000-person wait list of fans ready to rediscover the magic.)

The original product was developed in France in the 1920s, as a way to get a Riviera-level tan, and became a mainstay in beach culture starting in the ’70s and all the way up until 2019, when it was discontinued by then–parent company Bayer. Orange Gelée was used by the likes of Pamela Anderson, designer Tom Ford, and comedian Amy Sedaris.

A petition to bring back the product was even created on Change.org, garnering almost 11,000 signatures. Fans were purchasing mostly-expired tubes on eBay for upward of $200—a small price to pay to indulge in the orange emollient one last time. The buyers included the Vacation team, who ordered it to send to chemists, in an effort to re-create the formula.

Then the brand started the Orange Gelée Revival Project, a joint initiative by Vacation, dermatologists, and 11 lifelong Bain de Soleil fans, who tested lab samples, gave feedback, and helped create a healthy formula that got as close as possible to the original product.

The result: a glossy, orange-tinted balm-to-oil free of mineral oil, petrolatum, and paraffin, with a more appropriate SPF, that gives skin a long-lasting glow. The new Orange Gelée contains a slew of nourishing oils, including jojoba, sweet almond, bergamot, and coconut, as well as vitamin E. As for the scent—which Vacation says was the hardest element to nail down—the French Riviera–inspired fragrance was created by Carlos Huber (the nose behind Vacation’s signature fragrance) and Givaudan perfumers Dana Schmitt and John Gamba. With notes of bergamot, clove, saffron, patchouli, and sandalwood, it smells enough like the OG Bain de Soleil to satisfy die-hard fans, with a modern twist.
